Effective Communication Class
Writing is one of the most fundimenal skills that a student can learn. Start your student out with a firm grammatical and stylistic foundation by enrolling them in this semester long course. This class is ideally suited for students in 8th and 9th grade and can be an excellent refresher course for students in grade 10 and up.

Course Details:
Course Length: 14 weeks
Grade Level: Grades 8 and up
Required Skills:
- Ability to follow written directions
- Ability to communicate with teachers and other students via e-mail
- Basic computer skills (word processing, e-mail, web navigation)
- Self-discipline and organization.
- A willingness to work hard in order to succeed.
Required Materials
- High speed internet connecton
- Word processing software (MS Word recommended)
Course Structure: This is a modular course that will be administered using the course management system Moodle. Each week is a module. Assignments will be given on Monday and will be due on Sunday at midnight. Students may work on their assignments as they wish throughout the week. There are no manditory chat or conference times.
Grading: grades will be assigned in this course. Some assignments (such as dicsussion board posts) will be credit/no credit assignments. Others, such as formal papers, will be a process grade in which students will go through several revisions until the maximum grade is obtained.

Course Topics:
- Key Word Outlines - Students will learn to re-write sentences and paragraphs using an innovative key word outline system. This skill is very helpful when summarizing original sources.
- Dress-ups- The dress-ups are the foundation of effective writing and should be included in every paragraph that you write. Although simple to understand, including all six in a paragraph takes practice and skill.
- Sentence Openers - While dress-ups are contained within a sentence, the six sentence openers must begin a sentence. Including all six openers in every paragraph that you write will for sentence variety and creativity.
- Topic Sentences & Clinchers - Well written papers are well structured. Learning how to effectively organize your paragraphs with topic sentences and clincher sentences will ensure that they are well structured.
- Research writing-- Learning how to effectively research a topic and communicate that information to others is an essential skill. Students will learn how to evaluate sources, write a multi-page research paper, and correctly cite those sources in MLA format.
- Practice- students will have ample opportunity to practice all of the components of effective communication listed above through weekly written assignments. These assignments will be reviewed by the course instructor and individual feedback will be provided.
