Summer Field Biology: High School

The five classes below are designed to be fun and highly interactive. This course is not heavy on academics. There is no homework or grades (it is a summer course after all!) and each class is a self-contained unit. Our goal is to engage students in science, not to overwhelm them with facts and formulas.
Class 1: Cell Biology
The cell is the foundation of biology. Students will observe the features of plant and animal cells under a microscope, and view their own skin and blood cells.

Class 2:Genetics
Few scientific fields are as exciting or rapidly changing as genetics. The secrets of illness and disease are hidden within our DNA. During this class students will isolate DNA from the pea plant and learn how DNA is sequenced through gel electrophoresis—the same method that is used on TV shows like CSI.

Class 3: Environmental Chemistry
Water is one of our most precious resources. In Michigan, we are blessed to have an abundance of it! During this class students will learn about water quality and will test various water sources for chemical and biological contaminants.

Class 4: Entymology
Although they are small, insects comprise the largest living group of organisms in the world. There are many times more insects than people on earth! During this class students will hunt for various flying, crawling, and burrowing bugs.

Class 5: Animals-- Joint class @ Detroit Zoo!
The best place to see animals is at the Zoo! This class session will take place at the Detroit Zoo. Admission is included in the price of the course. Additional family members are welcome to join the class.
