Narnia Online
Explore the beloved Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis while learning about literary conventions such as plot, character development setting, alegorical writing, and use the fairy tale genre as a tool for conveying complex truths. This is a challenging high school course delivered online using the course managment system Moodle. Two optional face-to-face meetings will be held in Brighton, Michigan to watch and discuss the two Narnia movies.

Class Details:
Course Length: 14 weeks
Grade Level: Upper highschool (grades 11-12)
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of research paper writing.
- Ability to follow written directions
- Ability to communicate with teachers and other students via e-mail
- Basic computer skills (word processing, e-mail, web navigation)
- A love of reading
- Self-discipline and organization
Required Materials
- The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis (all 7, any edition)
- High speed internet connecton
- Word processing software (MS Word recommended)
Course Structure: This is a modular course. Each week is a module. Assignments will be given on Monday and will be due on Sunday at midnight. Students may work on their assignments as they wish throughout the week. There are no manditory chat or conference times. Individual tutoring will be available via chat or phone on a regular basis.
Sample Assignments
- Reading- students will read all 7 books in the Chronicles of Narnia series, an average of 70 pages per week.
- Quizzes- to keep students accountable to the reading, a weekly quiz will be given on the assigned reading.
- Discussion- each week students will respond to a thought provoking discussion prompt on a message board. Each student will post one original post and respond to the posts of two of their classmates.
- Writing- the final week of class, students will parepare a written paper analyzing different aspects of the Narnia series.
Grading: grades will be assigned in this course. Some assignments (such as dicsussion board posts) will be credit/no credit assignments. Others, such as formal papers will be a process grade in which students will go through several revisions until the maximum grade is obtained.
