Like other types of pupae, the chrysalis stage in most butterflies is one in which there is little movement. However, some butterfly pupae are capable of moving the abdominal segments to produce sounds or to scare away potential   predators.

Summer Field Biology: Middle School

The five classes below are designed to be fun and highly interactive. This course is not heavy on academics. There is no homework or grades (it is a summer course after all!) and each class is a self-contained unit. Our goal is to engage students in science, not to overwhelm them with facts and formulas.
Class 1: Problem Solving
Science is all about solving problems. During this class students will solve a problem involving an egg and a long fall. Bring your thinking cap!

Class 2: The Microscopic World
There is more to life than meets the eye! An invisible world of microbes surrounds us but become visible through the lens of a microscope. During this class students will learning how to make wet and dry microscope mounts and observe microscopic organisms

Class 3: Rockets
Few things have captured the imagination of America as much as rockets and space flight. During this class students will design a water powered rocket and test its flight and recovery. This lesson introduces basic concepts of physics such as aerodynamics, momentum, and energy.

Class 4: Plants
Plants collect energy from the sun through photosynthesis. This process provides the energy for all living things. Student will learn the basics of photosynthesis and observe photosynthesis in action through observation of the water plant elodea. They will also have the opportunity to separate the photosynthetic pigments in leaves through a process called chromatography.

Class 5: Animals-- Joint class @ Detroit Zoo!
The best place to see animals is at the Zoo! This class session will take place at the Detroit Zoo. Admission is included in the price of the course. Additional family members are welcome to join the class.
